Top 10 beaches near Auckland: driving distances & what else to see

Auckland is one of the few cities in the world where you can genuinely choose your beach mood — calm and swimmable, wild and dramatic, or a ferry ride into wine country — often within an hour's drive. Here are our top 10, ranked roughly by driving distance, with what else is worth seeing while you're there.

1. Takapuna Beach ~15 min from the CBD

Cross the Harbour Bridge and you're there — a curve of golden-shell sand looking straight across at Rangitoto Island, Auckland's best-known volcanic cone. Calm and swimmable, popular with paddleboarders and families, and lined with cafes just back from the sand.

While you're there: walk north at low tide to Fossil Point to see 150,000-year-old lava flows, or browse the Takapuna weekend markets.

2. Mission Bay ~20 min from the CBD

A classic city beach with a playground, a fountain that lights up at night, and a waterfront strip of restaurants and cafes. Easy, sheltered swimming and the most "just for an afternoon" of any beach on this list.

While you're there: SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium is a short walk along the waterfront, and Bastion Point nearby has sweeping harbour views.

3. Long Bay ~25–30 min from the CBD

Auckland's favourite regional park beach — a kilometre of gently sloping sand backed by a coastal marine reserve, with clifftop walking tracks and old WWII gun emplacements tucked into the headland.

While you're there: pack a picnic for the reserve's BBQ areas and playground, or walk the cliff track for Hauraki Gulf views.

4. Orewa Beach ~30–40 min from the CBD

A long, straight three-kilometre stretch that's genuinely good for a proper walk, plus a small town's worth of cafes and shops right behind the sand.

While you're there: Wenderholm Regional Park is a few minutes further north, one of Auckland's prettiest regional parks, with its own sheltered estuary beach and bush walks. If you don't mind pushing on another 20–30 minutes up the coast towards Matakana, the area is dotted with boutique vineyards, and Sculptureum is worth the detour — part sculpture park, part working vineyard, with over 800 artworks across three gardens and six galleries.

5. Waiheke Island — Onetangi Beach ~40 min ferry

Not a drive — a ferry from downtown Auckland, with sailings roughly every 30–60 minutes. Onetangi is Waiheke's longest, whitest beach, and the island itself is home to more than 30 wineries.

While you're there: book a winery lunch — Mudbrick and Cable Bay are both easy from the ferry terminal — or just treat the day as a proper island escape rather than a quick beach stop.

6. Muriwai Beach ~40 min from the CBD

Black ironsand and big Tasman Sea surf on Auckland's west coast, best known for the gannet colony on Otakamiro Point — free entry, and close enough to the car park to suit most families.

While you're there: the gannets nest August to March, so time your visit for that window if birdwatching is the drawcard. Strong rips mean this is a look-and-walk beach more than a swimming one for young kids.

7. Piha Beach ~45 min from the CBD

Auckland's most famous black-sand surf beach, dominated by the volcanic outcrop of Lion Rock. Wild, beautiful, and genuinely more dangerous than the east coast beaches — patrolled by lifeguards in summer, but rips are real here.

While you're there: the Kitekite Falls walk is an easy one-hour return through native rainforest to a 40-metre waterfall and swimming hole — one of the best family walks near Auckland.

8. Karekare Beach ~45–60 min from the CBD

Wilder and quieter than Piha, with the same black sand and rugged drama — this is the beach from The Piano. No cafes, no crowds, just cliffs and surf.

While you're there: Karekare Falls is a five-to-ten-minute walk from the road to a 30-metre waterfall with a (cold) swimming pool at the base.

9. Omaha Beach ~60 min from the CBD

A long, sheltered, white-sand beach that's calmer than the west coast and further out than the east-coast city beaches — popular with Auckland families for a proper day or weekend trip.

While you're there: Matakana township is six minutes away, with a Saturday farmers' market and around 15 boutique wineries within a 15-minute drive.

10. Tāwharanui Beach ~80 min from the CBD

The furthest on this list, and worth it if you have a full day: a wide white-sand beach inside a working farm and marine reserve, considered one of the best swimming and surfing spots in the whole region.

While you're there: the regional park has walking trails through pasture and wetland, and it's genuinely a place to spend the whole day rather than a quick stop — pack a picnic, there's very little else out there.

• Reusable water bottles — cafes are common on the city beaches but not on Karekare or Tāwharanui
