Top waterfalls near Auckland: driving distances & walk times

Hunua Falls cascading into a pool, surrounded by native bush

Hunua Falls — native bush, real walk times, and which pools are safe to swim in.

Auckland's ranges are full of waterfalls tucked into native bush, most of them within an hour's drive of the CBD. Some are a five-minute stroll from the car park, others a proper bush walk — and one of the most photogenic is also the most dangerous to swim at. Here's what you actually need to know before you go.

The list at a glance

1Hunua Falls~45–50 min
2Kitekite Falls~45 min
3Karekare Falls~45–60 min
4Fairy Falls~45 min
5Wainamu Falls~50 min

All drive times are approximate, measured from Auckland's CBD, and will run longer in peak traffic or summer weekends.

Kauri dieback — clean your shoes at every station: Auckland's bush walks pass through kauri forest, and kauri dieback disease has already killed a significant share of the region's kauri trees. Every track has hygiene stations at the start and end — use the spray and brush every single time, even if your shoes look clean. Skipping this isn't a minor shortcut; it's how the disease spreads between forests.

1. Hunua Falls ~45–50 min from the CBD

A wide, 30-metre curtain of water in the Hunua Ranges Regional Park, reached by a flat five-minute walk from the car park — genuinely the easiest waterfall on this list to get to. The pool at the base looks made for swimming, which is exactly the problem.

Do not swim here: Hunua Falls has recorded more preventable drownings than any other waterfall in New Zealand. The pool has a powerful undertow and hidden rock cavities beneath the surface that can trap swimmers — several people pulled under have never been recovered. Onsite warning signs exist for good reason. Come to look, photograph and picnic, not to swim.

While you're there: the surrounding regional park has longer forest walks and picnic areas if you want to make a half-day of it rather than just the falls.

2. Kitekite Falls ~45 min from the CBD

Piha's three-tiered, 40-metre waterfall, reached by an easy 45–60 minute return walk on gravel track and boardwalk through the Waitākere Ranges. It's one of the most popular short walks near Auckland for good reason — well-formed track, a gradual climb, and a genuine swimming pool at the base when conditions allow.

While you're there: Piha Beach itself is a couple of minutes back down the road — see our Auckland beaches guide for what else to do there, including Lion Rock and the surf.

3. Karekare Falls ~45–60 min from the CBD

The easiest proper waterfall walk near Auckland — a flat 15-minute return stroll through native bush to a 30-metre fall, with toilets and picnic spots at the car park. Good for young kids and anyone who doesn't want a long walk, though the path has some steps and isn't stroller-friendly.

While you're there: Karekare Beach — the black-sand beach from The Piano — is right at the same car park, wild and quiet with none of Piha's crowds.

4. Fairy Falls ~45 min from the CBD

A series of small upper cascades flowing into a larger fall at the bottom, reached by a 2.5km walk with a few steep sections and stairs — the most demanding walk on this list, best suited to families with older kids rather than a pram or toddler in tow.

While you're there: the track connects into the wider Waitākere Ranges walkway network if anyone in the family wants to extend the walk further.

5. Wainamu Falls ~50 min from the CBD

Near Bethells Beach on the west coast, reached via the Lake Wainamu Track — either over sand dunes or along the stream and around the lake. The dunes themselves are half the fun: kids love sliding down them on body boards before or after the falls.

While you're there: Bethells Beach (Te Henga) is right nearby, rugged and black-sand, with its own short walks and a lagoon that's calmer than the open surf.

Packing list for a waterfall walk

Pro tip — check for track closures first: Waitākere Ranges tracks occasionally close for maintenance, weather damage or further kauri protection work. It's worth a quick check of the Auckland Council parks website the morning of your visit rather than arriving to a locked gate.
