Queenstown is New Zealand's adventure capital, but it's just as good a base for families who want a mellower pace — the mountains, lake and gold-rush history around it are worth a proper five days on their own, without even leaving the district. Here's exactly how we'd spend them.
The plan at a glance
Day 1 — Queenstown town
Ease in with the headline act: the Skyline Gondola up Bob's Peak for a lake and mountain view worth the ride alone, then straight onto the Luge — buy the multi-ride pass, since one run down is never enough. If the kids want one more adrenaline hit up there, the Vortex Slide is Skyline's other big ride — a steeper, faster slide (up to 35km/h) alongside the Luge tracks, with a minimum height of 110cm and age 6, sold separately at the ticketing desk or the Luge Shack.
Back in town, the lakefront itself is free and worth a proper wander — Queenstown Gardens on the peninsula has a frisbee golf course our kids rated well above things that cost $80, and the main street is genuinely charming for browsing shops without needing to buy anything. For an easy win with the kids, Patagonia Chocolates on the corner of Rees Street and The Mall (right on the lakefront) is a real hit — award-winning handmade chocolates and a big range of ice cream flavours, with a second floor looking straight out over Lake Wakatipu.
The gondola-and-luge combo pass is the best value way to do this — skip the queue and lock in your multi-ride pass.

One thrill, one properly relaxing — and they pair well into a single day since neither takes all day on its own. Shotover Jet is the adrenaline half: high-speed 360-degree spins through the narrow Shotover River canyons, done in about an hour, with a family pass (2 adults, 2 kids) running around NZ$507.
The TSS Earnslaw is the other end of the scale — the oldest commercial passenger steamship in the Southern Hemisphere, launched in 1912, still cruising Lake Whakatipu to Walter Peak High Country Farm. The farm tour is a relaxed 3.5 hours, with a farmyard full of Highland cows, alpacas and sheep to meet, plus afternoon tea.
An alternative: the Hydro Attack "shark boat"
If your family wants something different from a jet boat, Hydro Attack is a semi-submersible ride that looks like a shark cutting through the lake — it looks brilliant in photos, but worth knowing exactly what you're booking: each shark seats one rider plus the pilot, so it's a one-at-a-time thrill rather than a group family activity. There's also a support boat that can carry a group of 6-10 out to the launch spot to take turns. There's a practical size limit too — riders need to fit the cockpit, with a recommended maximum around 195cm tall and 105-110kg.

Start planning in WayTallyDay 3 — Milford Sound Full day, ~12-13 hours door to door
The big one, and worth going in with realistic expectations: Milford Sound is 296km from Queenstown, around 4 hours' drive each way, so a coach day trip with the cruise included runs 12-13 hours door to door. Most coach tours pick up around 7am, drive the Milford Road with commentary and photo stops, include a 2-2.5 hour cruise on the fiord, and get you back by 7:30-8pm.
It's a long day, but the fiord itself is genuinely one of the most beautiful things you'll see in New Zealand — sheer rock faces rising straight out of the water, Mitre Peak's near-symmetrical summit, native bush clinging to impossibly steep cliffs, and (with some luck) fur seals, penguins or dolphins in the water. The cruise gets you right up close to the permanent waterfalls, Lady Bowen and Stirling Falls, close enough that the boat sometimes noses in for a light spray.
If a long day in a coach seat isn't for your family, a scenic flight one-way over the Southern Alps cuts the travel time dramatically — fly one way, cruise the fiord, then return by road through the Homer Tunnel, for a noticeably shorter day at a higher price point.

A charming, compact gold-rush village about 20 minutes from Queenstown — an easy half-day rather than a big production. Hire gold pans at the Lakes District Museum and head down to the Arrow River to try your luck, or book in with Arrowtown Gold Panning Co. for a guided tutorial with a gold guarantee. The museum itself is genuinely well done, built around the town's original bank and stables, with a recreated basement streetscape kids tend to enjoy wandering through.
Buckingham Street, the main street, is worth slowing down for in its own right — tree-lined, genuinely pretty, and lined with sweet shops and souvenir stores that are easy to lose half an hour browsing. Just off the main street, the Arrowtown Chinese Settlement is a five-to-ten-minute walk away and free to visit — restored huts from the 1870s-80s Chinese gold-mining community, with bilingual interpretation panels telling a genuinely moving side of the gold rush story that the main town doesn't cover. Museum, main street and the Chinese Settlement are all walking distance from each other, so the whole day trip works without needing to move the car.
A guided gold-panning tour (often bundled with a scenic drive through Kawarau Gorge and morning tea) takes the guesswork out of where to actually find gold.

Around 45 minutes from Queenstown along what's regularly voted one of the most scenic drives in the world, Glenorchy sits at the head of Lake Whakatipu. This is Middle-earth territory — the surrounding valleys stood in for Isengard, Lothlórien and the Fellowship's camp at Amon Hen, and Paradise Valley (yes, a real place) appears in multiple scenes.
A half-day Lord of the Rings scenic tour is the easiest way to see the key locations with commentary; families with more time can add horse trekking or a jet boat trip into Paradise Valley itself.
Pure Glenorchy is the only operator with access to the privately owned Arcadia Station filming locations — worth booking if the Lord of the Rings connection is the main draw.

If you're visiting between around December and late January, swap Glenorchy for a day around Cromwell instead, roughly 45 minutes from Queenstown through the Gibbston wine valley. Cheeki Cherries and Cherry Tree Farm both run proper pick-your-own cherry orchards — staff show kids how to harvest, buckets are provided, and Cheeki Cherries lets under-10s in free. Go before mid-January if you can, since the season winds down by late January.
On the way there or back, Gibbston Valley has a couple of genuinely kid-friendly wine stops if the grown-ups want a tasting: Waitiri Creek has a relaxed patio and food options that work well with kids in tow, and the Gibbston Tavern is a family-run, kid- and dog-friendly spot doing wood-fired pizzas alongside the wine.
